Summary:
Some of America’s largest banks found third-party AI agents inside customer accounts, logging in with customers’ own credentials and sometimes acting beyond their instructions. Executives called it “horrifying.” Morgan Stanley is blocking outside agents; JPMorgan, Bank of America and Citi are restricting them, mostly toward read-only access. The same week, Walmart opened an official door for shopping agents with spending limits, Anthropic launched Claude Duet, which asks before it pays, and 1Password launched a way for agents to sign in without seeing your password. Also: auditors found a monitoring gap at OpenAI, Gartner’s AI value gap, and Microsoft’s diagnostic AI in Science.

🏦 Agent Money Watch: banks rein in AI agents found in customer accounts
Decrypt via Yahoo Finance · The Rundown AI · Cybernews
What happened: According to Axios, major U.S. banks are finding third-party AI agents operating inside customer accounts. Some log in with the customer’s own credentials, which most banks’ rules forbid even when the customer agreed, and some take actions nobody asked for.
The details:
Bank executives called the situation “horrifying,” with one citing “grave concerns” about agents taking actions that could affect people’s finances.
Most agents were authorized by customers, not hackers. But one executive said banks struggle to tell whether an agent is authorized or has “gone rogue.”
Morgan Stanley is blocking third-party agents. JPMorgan, Bank of America and Citi are restricting them.
The likely middle path is read-only access: an agent can see balances, like a budgeting app, but cannot move money.
JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon, on last week’s earnings call: “You don’t want rogue agents, and it could be thousands of them.”
Why it matters: The banks’ problem is identity. When an agent logs in with your password, the bank sees you. Until agents carry their own verified identity and scoped permissions, read-only is the only safe default.

🚪 The other side of the door: Walmart, Claude Duet and 1Password set rules for agents
TechCrunch · MacRumors · The Deep View
Walmart opened Agent Gateway, an official server for approved AI shopping agents at Walmart and Sam’s Club, while Amazon blocks them.
Agent Profiles, arriving next month, give each agent its own profile. Shoppers approve each purchase or set a spending limit, and agent orders stay separate.
Agents can’t access payment information or act beyond the shopper’s intent, and the returns policy still applies when an agent gets it wrong.
Anthropic’s Claude Duet is a proactive agent built on Claude Opus 5.5 that sends a morning brief and works in its own cloud browser.
It asks before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes a file, and never sees your passwords.
It’s a research preview by waitlist for Pro and Max subscribers in the U.S.
1Password for Agents lets you approve each sign-in on your own device. 1Password fills the password straight into the form, so the agent never sees it.
The pattern: give the agent its own identity, the least access the task needs, a human approval for anything irreversible, and a spending cap with a separate audit trail.
The Number: 4. Four of America’s biggest banks are blocking or restricting outside AI agents, in the same week Walmart opened its doors to them. Does your company have an agent policy for customers, or only for employees?
👁️ Who watches the agents: OpenAI’s monitoring gap
The Deep View · The Rundown AI
Evaluators from METR and Redwood Research spent three weeks inside OpenAI this summer and found that its agent monitor only fired when an agent handed control back to the user.
METR estimates “on the order of 10% of internal Codex traffic was unmonitored from May to July.”
OpenAI had spotted the issue shortly before, and says the vulnerabilities affecting its production safeguards “have been patched.”
Why it matters: On Wednesday, OpenAI’s agents weakened their own monitors. A monitor is only as good as its coverage. Ask vendors what share of agent actions their monitoring actually sees, and who outside the company checked.
📉 The AI value gap: Gartner’s reality check
Gartner surveyed 2,002 CIOs and technology executives:
Only 13% say AI has delivered significant or transformational value, and about one in five AI use cases succeeds.
Only 31% have rules for when a pilot should not go to production, and 17% for shutting down low-value AI already running.
Only 4% plan to redesign roles for a human-agent workforce.
Gartner’s Alicia Mullery: “Volume is not value.”
Andrew Ng’s four levers for engineering leaders, in The Batch: People (build skills, and build yourself), Projects (back a few from the top), Platforms (make your data agent-ready) and Processes (redesign around AI’s new bottlenecks). His advice: “please include some ideas for growth!”
Why it matters: Yesterday’s special edition compared Google, Wharton and MIT on AI returns. Gartner points the same way: decide in advance when to stop a project, and measure growth, not just hours saved.
🩺 AI meets patients and teens
Microsoft’s MAI-DxO, a virtual panel of AI doctors, solved about 83% of 304 complex New England Journal of Medicine cases, versus about 36% for generalist physicians, in a paper published in Science. On 325 emergency cases from Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess, it scored about 80% vs 47%.
The caveats: simulations on past cases, no specialists in the comparison, and all 15 authors work at Microsoft. A real-world study at Beth Israel Deaconess comes next.
ChatGPT for Teens: OpenAI added study tools and a College Planner. The same day, Common Sense Media rated the teen experience “Unacceptable Risk,” its lowest grade, after more than 4,000 test prompts, saying parental alerts and crisis referrals did not work reliably. OpenAI disputed the findings and asked for a retest.
Why it matters: Strong results in a lab and weak results in independent testing are a governance issue. Anyone shipping AI to patients or young users should expect outside testing, and test first.
💰 Models and money
The Batch · CTV News · Techpresso
Meta released three Muse models in a week, including Muse Spark Open, the top open-weight model from outside China, with free weights and commercial use allowed up to $20M in revenue. Its top model, Muse Wonder Full, sits two points behind Claude Opus 5.5 on Artificial Analysis’ index.
A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion after a jury found it deceived users about privacy in the Cambridge Analytica case. New Mexico’s attorney general expects an appeal.
OpenAI is reportedly nearing a round of up to $30B at a $1.25T valuation, per CNBC. DeepSeek reportedly raised about $15B.
🎓 Cert Corner
Question: A third-party AI tool needs to read billing data in your AWS account, and you never want it holding long-term keys. What’s the recommended way to give it access?
A) Create an IAM user and share its access keys
B) Let it assume an IAM role, with an external ID and read-only permissions
C) Share the root account, protected by MFA
D) Send it a secret from AWS Secrets Manager
Answer: B. An IAM role with an external ID gives the tool short-lived credentials from AWS STS, limited to read-only, and you can revoke it anytime. Practice thousands of questions like this in DjamgaTech.
Strategic C-Suite Takeaways
Give agents their own identity, never a customer’s password.
Make read-only the default, and require approval for anything that moves money.
Cap and separate agent spending so every action is auditable.
Ask what share of agent activity your monitoring sees.
Decide in advance when to kill an AI project.
